Drug Abuse

The village Trend

He was lying lifless on the ground as people where starring.

It was my first time in six years of returning to the village, I left the village at a tender age. It was 1990 when my father passed away and after the burial I left for the city with my step-brother’s wife,

I have resided with my stepbrother and his wife since then even up until now and going to the village has been like a national anthem we sing every year. Since 1990, I have only gone to the village twice and on both occasion was for burial, the first time was in 2005, due to the death of the father of my stepbrothers wife and in 2013 for the burial of my mother, this where the only occasions I have visited my home town since the demise of my father.

After much trial in getting admission into the university, heaven finally smiled on me and I got admitted into university close to my own state, so this became an opportunity for me to visit my village . We started our first semester exams a week before Easter, we had two papers that week before the short Easter break. The last paper before the break was on Thursday (Holy Thursday), and the next day been Friday (Good Friday) ,

I set out on a trip to my home town and this will be the first time that I was traveling to my home town alone , so I got to the park and after waiting for an hour for the bus to get filled up, we finally hit the road. I was happy not only because I was going to my home town but also because I knew I was going to get some food stuff and pocket money. Any university student knows that exam period is usually the time student are always short of money and food stuffs.

I don't know how but once its exam period, our money and food stuffs tend to deminish at a rapid rate. So the break gave students (those who lives close or those whose home town is not too distant from the school) an avenue to travel . After two and half hour on the road we finally arrived at our destination, been the first time of going to my village alone, it was difficult for me to locate my village but after making some few enquries I was able to find my way. My brother was waiting for me at the junction with his bike and immediately he saw me, he was grinning with smiles all over his face, he was happy to see me home. I got on his bike and he drove me home.

Nothing beat the calmness and the serenity of the village, after freshen up and having my meal, I took a nap and when I woke up we did a little catching up. By 7pm I went to his shop, the location of his shop is quite a view, you can see things happening around, and it was there I started noticing the rate at which people smoke (weed inclusive) and take drug such as tramadol, rohynol, codine e.t.c, is alarming, not only the rate also the age of people abusing this drugs.

A 13yrs old boy was openly smoking weed mixing some drugs in his drink, I was bewildered as I watch with my mouth opened. My brother later told me that it was now a trend in the village, that children of Age (12 and above ) smoke and take drugs, the worst of it all there is nobody to caution them as most of them take it to work, feel ecstatic, perform well in bed and whole lot of stupid reasons. It is not that rural Areas are the only place where this things happen but it has high percentage of drug abuse and government little or no effort to sanction drug peddlers, educate the people of the adverse effect of drug abuse in the society.

The nextday i decided to take a walk, I haven't even gone five miles , I saw people gathering, I decided to find what was happening only to see a boy about the age of 15, he was lying lifless on the ground as people where starring. Some young men came up and quickly rushed his to the hospital. We later heard that day that he died in the hospital. And it was later discovered that it was due to overdose of drug ( tramadol) he took to work that day. The question is who is to be blamed? Is it the Government alone? What about the parents? And the elderly ones who did little or nothing to stop them???
